Current constitution:5 May 1999, when the constitution enshrining the return to civilian democratic government was signed by the outgoing military ruler Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar. Political makeup of government: The People?s Democratic Party holds the presidency and a majority in both houses of parliament. President Yar Adua took office on 29 May 2007, and his new cabinet was sworn in on 26 July. The minister of health and her deputy both resigned on 26 March 2008 after allegations of corruption. The president announced on 11 September the creation of a new ministry of the Niger Delta region. On 31 October a major reshuffle of the cabinet began; portfolios were allocated to most of the new ministers on 17 December, after they had been approved by the Senate; the minister of finance was appointed on 23 December.
