Date CPA Branch formed: 1946 - (Gold Coast) 1957 - (Ghana) Parties in the House: NDC, NPP, CPP, PNC Current constitution: 7 January 1993, When the Fourth Republic was inaugurated under a constitution approved in a referendum the previous April, and civilian government was restored. Political makeup of government: In the 2008 presidential elections the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Atta Mills, was elected in the second round, and in the simultaneous legislative elections the NDC won half of the seats to become the largest party in parliament. Mills began nominating ministers to his new Council of Ministers on 23 January 2009, with further announcements on 27 January. They were approved by parliament in the first half of February. Three more ministers of state were approved on 11 March. The minister for youth and sports was suspended on 16 June after allegations of financial irregularities, and replaced on an acting basis. Despite being cleared of the allegations he announced his resignation on 26 June. Following his presidential election victory Mills began nominating ministers to his new Council of Ministers on 23 January 2009, with further announcements on 27 January. They were approved by parliament in the first half of February. Three more ministers of state were approved on 11 March. The minister of health and one of the ministers of state in the office of the president resigned on 9 October after allegations of bribery. Their replacements were named on 13 October. A number of changes to the cabinet were announced on 25 January 2010. All had been approved by parliament and sworn into office by 10 March. More changes were announced on 4 January 2011, to take effect on 21 January. The Legislature is unicameral. The sole chamber, the Parliament, has 230 members, directly elected for a four-year term.
